Assassination is the targeted killing of a public figure for religious, ideological, political, or military reasons. People who perform assassinations are known as assassins.
The Romulan Star Empire believed that Senator Vreenak was assassinated by the Dominion for uncovering evidence that the Dominion planned to launch an invasion against the Star Empire regardless of their nonaggression pact. In reality Vreenak was killed by Elim Garak to frame the Dominion and bring the Star Empire into the Dominion War on the side of the Federation.[1]
